Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske delivered standout performances in the women’s 100-meter freestyle at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Fort Lauderdale, recording the fastest times globally for 2025.
Walsh led the race from the start, turning at the 50-meter mark in 25.22 seconds, four-tenths ahead of the field. Despite a strong closing effort from Huske, Walsh held on to win by a narrow margin, finishing in 52.90 seconds to Huske’s 52.95.
These times surpassed the previous world-leading mark of 53.01 seconds set by Italy’s Sara Curtis earlier in the year. The race also featured strong performances from Kate Douglass, who finished third in 53.61, and teenager Rylee Erisman, who placed fourth with a time of 53.78. Notably, Olympic co-champions from 2016, Penny Oleksiak of Canada and Simone Manuel of the USA, finished fifth and sixth with times of 53.89 and 53.99, respectively.
The TYR Pro Swim Series in Fort Lauderdale has attracted a deep field of talent, including numerous Olympic medalists, as swimmers prepare for upcoming national and international competitions. The women’s 100-meter freestyle final showcased the depth and competitiveness of American women’s sprinting, with four swimmers clocking times under 54 seconds.
Walsh and Huske’s performances in Fort Lauderdale highlight their status as top contenders in the sprint freestyle events, setting the stage for exciting matchups in the lead-up to the World Championships.
