Male Pattern Baldness: Causes and Treatment

Each strand of hair generally sits on a tiny cavity in the skin called a follicle. Baldness occurs when the hair follicle shrinks over time, resulting in shorter and finer hair

Causes of Male Pattern Baldness

The main cause of male baldness is usually heredity as families who have a history of baldness in their family tend to pass it down to the lower generations.

With aging there comes the effect of baldness whereby with age the new growth of hair stops and over a period of time the existing hair falls resulting in baldness.

Tumors and skin outgrowths can also cause temporary and localized baldness; it is also thought that in some cases there may be temporary baldness caused by stress anxiety and depression among some people.

Dandruff can also be an issue, though it doesn’t directly cause male baldness, indirectly dandruff or dandruff scabs can cause baldness due to itching the scalp again and again. Due to itching, when you scratch, the hair follicles can be injured that can lead to hair loss.



Baldness due to heredity or aging is usually challenging to treat as drugs or medication will only try to postpone the balding but curing it won’t be possible.

Treatment of baldness is sometimes is not necessary especially when you are contented with it; hair weaving or hairpieces can act as ways of disguising the baldness. This is usually the easiest and less expensive of treating the baldness condition.

Minoxidil (Rogaine) is a medical solution for treating baldness with the application of this solution on the hair you will be able to stimulate the hair follicles which control hair growth. This solution is known to slow hair loss and some circumstance stimulates the growth of other hairs. Balding due to skin or scalp infection or some kind of fungal infection is medically curable but is usually a slow process that may take months.


Hair transplants have now taken over in the world of treating baldness, this process involves removing tiny plugs of hair from areas with normal hair growth and transplanting them in areas undergoing balding. This method is usually quite expensive and may cause some scarring and possible infections but the best thing about this treatment method is that when it is successful, it results in excellent and permanent hair growth in those regions.

Finasteride is a drug passed by the food and drugs board to be able to treat baldness, this drug is able to prevent the conversion of testosterone into DHT   which is known to cause hair baldness in men but usually takes about 3 months to show results.
