The Blue Mosque

This is a great historical place in Turkey that any tourist can visit without considering religion. The Blue Mosque was built in 7 years from 1609 to 1616. It was built during the Ottoman dynasty when Sultan Ahmed I ordered Mehmet AÄŸa to design this mosque.

It is situated in Istanbul and it is called Blue Mosque because in its design, a lot of blue tiles are used. Its other name is Sultan Ahmet Camii which means Mosque of Sultan Ahmed.

This historical place in Turkey is more like a social complex rather than just a mosque. Local people still visit this place for daily prayer, but it has a Sultan Resting Mansion, a great fountain, a Turkish traditional bath, a madrassa, a hospital, Mekteb-I Sıbyan, and rental rooms as well.

Hagia Sophia

Among the best historical places to visit in Turkey, Hagia Sophia (Also called Ayasofya in Turkish) has its own importance. This historical building in Turkey is more than 1400 years old that was built in the 6th century as a church. During the Ottoman empire, this church was turned into a mosque in 1453.

Later in 1934, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk declared it as a museum. People from all around the world visit Istanbul, Turkey, just to visit this place. Recently in 2021, Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan declared Hagia Sophia a mosque again. This decision created a lot of controversies as well.

Now, Muslims can go and offer their prayer at Hagia Sophia. But with that people from all other religions can freely visit Hagia Sophia as its status as a museum is still intact.

Topkapı Palace

Another historical place in Turkey that belongs to the Ottoman empire is Topkapı Palace. The Sultans of the Ottoman empire used to live at this place as it was their residence. This palace occupies almost 700,000 M square area that consists of the main palace and a lot of different courtyards.

The construction of this palace started in 1465 (or in 1459 according to other sources) and it was completed in 1478. Inside the palace, you can visit the Harem, Museum, Historical Kitchens, Audience Hall, Treasury, High Court, and Hospital.

Though it is an expensive place to visit as the ticket pass is costly, it is worth visiting if you want to visit historical places in Turkey that remind you of the glory of the Ottoman empire.

Church of Saint Nicholas

This is one of the oldest surviving churches that still exist. The Church of Saint Nicholas was built in 520 AD. You can find this historical Byzantine church in the city Myra a city in Antalya province of Turkey. St Nicholas Museum is the second name of this Church and it is open for tourists.
