Bollywood actress Janhvi Kapoor has spoken candidly about her personal struggle with alcohol addiction, describing it as the “biggest villain” in her life. In recent interviews and at the launch of a new awareness initiative, the 28-year-old actress revealed how what started as casual social drinking quietly escalated into dependency, silently taking control before she even realised it.
Janhvi shared that the turning point came when she began experiencing severe hangovers every morning and developed a strong aversion to even the smell of alcohol. “It silently took control,” she reflected, highlighting how the addiction crept up without her noticing until those physical warning signs forced her to confront the reality.
Speaking at the launch of ‘Off The Rocks’ — an initiative she has launched in partnership with mental health organisation Amaha — Janhvi stressed that addiction should never be viewed as a moral failing or sign of weakness.
“The conversation around alcohol is either completely absent or deeply judgmental — and neither serves the people who actually need support. Alcohol addiction is real, it’s clinical, and it affects people across every walk of life.”
She emphasised that as alcohol consumption has become increasingly normalised in social settings, there remains little clarity about when casual drinking crosses the line into a clinical problem. Janhvi urged greater awareness and compassion, saying the initiative aims to make it easier for people to acknowledge the issue and know that professional help exists.
From Personal Struggle to Public Purpose

Janhvi has witnessed the destructive impact of addiction not only in her own life but also among people close to her. She described how difficult it can be to watch someone you care about slide into dependency, and advised against harsh confrontation.
“One of the most important things I’ve learnt is that you should almost never confront someone when they are in a delirious state or under the influence… My battle cry is very simple: don’t abuse it. When you cross that line, when you see those red flags on someone you care about, know how to handle the situation.”
The ‘Off The Rocks’ initiative seeks to reduce stigma, provide accessible resources, and promote alcohol addiction as a treatable mental health condition rather than a character flaw. Backed by Amaha’s clinical expertise, the community-driven platform will offer education, support, and guidance for those struggling and their families.
Janhvi expressed hope that her openness will encourage more honest conversations with less judgment and more compassion. She believes recovery is possible with the right care and self-awareness, and wants to ensure no one feels alone or ashamed when seeking help.
Her revelations have sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many praising the actress for breaking the silence around a topic often shrouded in taboo in Indian society and the entertainment industry. Janhvi’s move adds to her growing reputation for speaking openly about mental health and vulnerability.
As ‘Off The Rocks’ begins its journey, Janhvi Kapoor’s message remains clear: alcohol addiction is a battle that deserves understanding, medical support, and empathy — not silence or shame.
