CHENNAI: According to the India Tourism Statistics 2021 published by the Union Ministry of Tourism, Tamil Nadu has emerged as a leading tourist destination by topping the country in tourist arrivals in 2020.

In 2020, the state is expected to receive approximately 140 million domestic tourists, accounting for a percentage of the total of 22.9%. The state came in second to Maharashtra in terms of international tourist arrivals.

TN had 1.23 million tourists, and Maharashtra had 1.62 million. India received 45 percent of its foreign visitor arrivals from Bangladesh, the United States, and the UK, according to the data.

More than six percent of all foreign visitors landed at the airport in the city of Chennai. More than half of all international visitors from Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, France, and South Korea chose to enter the country through Chennai, the city’s main airport.

Due to the state’s robust tourist infrastructure, Tamil Nadu is ranked as one of the top five states in terms of total number of hotel rooms.

It also rated second among ASI-ticketed monuments for domestic tourists and fifth for foreign tourists for Mamallapuram, one of five Unesco World Heritage Sites in the state.

According to a press release by the state government, other popular ASI monuments in the state include Fort Museum, Fort Vattakottai, Gingee Fort, and the Rock Cut Jain Temple at Sittannavasal.

The ministry of tourism and Indian embassies across the world worked together to increase foreign visitor arrivals.

The Indian government has appointed tourism officers in 20 Indian embassies in countries such as Australia, Canada, France, China, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Japan, Myanmar, Portugal, Oman, Russia, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Spain, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, the United States, and the United Kingdom order to help boost tourism after the pandemic.

This will help increase foot traffic. The citizens from the Netherlands may get their Indian visa for Netherlands citizens in order to visit Tamil Nadu or any other Indian state.

It is estimated that the state will have over 140 million visitors in 2020 and will hold the number one spot for the number of domestic tourists visiting the state, according to Tourism Secretary B Chandra Mohan.

The state came in second place in terms of international tourist arrivals, just ahead of Maharashtra. Citizens from Portugal are also required to get their own Indian visa for Portuguese citizens.

The state of Tamil Nadu has been promoting its tourist attractions around the world with the help of these Indian missions, he said.

Key endeavors by the state government include the development of lesser-known areas including Kolli Hills, Jawadhu Hills, and Yelagiri as an adventure and eco-camping destinations.

Both domestic and foreign tourists have been flocking to visit the state over the past five years.
